Office 12: “Bye Bye, Menus!”

Microsoft has publicly announced on their website that Office 12 will be removing menus and toolbars in exchange for a new UI element called the “Ribbon” (though note that Microsoft doesn’t mention “the Ribbon” by name on their website).

This move is in an effort to make Office’s hundreds, if not thousands, of features easily available to the user, instead of requiring the user to wade through dozens of submenus and dialog boxes in order to find the option or feature they’re looking for. However, I have heard that there are some disadvantages: in the early beta versions of Office 12 that are currently available the Ribbon is a lot less customizable than the toolbars and menus that it replaces.

So will this daring UI breakthrough set the standard for applications of the future, or will it be doomed to the same fate as Clippy?

Only One Hurricane Name Left

According to this Salt Lake Tribune article:

Less than a day after making this hurricane season the second-busiest on record, the former Hurricane Vince began to break up Monday over the cooler waters of the far eastern Atlantic, forecasters said.

Wilma is the only name left for storms this season. After that, storms are named after letters in the Greek alphabet – which hasn’t happened in more than 50 years of naming storms.

I suppose now would be a good time to invest in the Hurricane Wilma stock on the Yahoo Buzz Game;-)

America Online Gets a New Name

According to this News.com article, America Online will be officially renaming to AOL as it tries to expand into other countries besides the United States, particularly China. Also of some importance, the article mentions that AOL has stopped sending out those annoying “free AOL” CDs.

Windows XP SP3 Confirmed

Reports had been circulating this week that Microsoft was working on a third service pack for its Windows XP operating system. Just yesterday PCWorld announced that Microsoft had confirmed the Service Pack 3 “leak.” Microsoft said that Windows XP Service Pack 3 would be available after Windows Vista is released in late 2006.

Yahoo Buzz Game is Back

According to this Yahoo Search blog post, the Yahoo Buzz Game is now back! From the Yahoo blog post:

Round 2 features a number of new stocks, including Google Earth, iRobot Scooba, the decidedly droolworthy Kaleidescape, and a mini-concentration in open source technologies, including open source databases, licensing, and GUI toolkits.

If you’re not familiar with the Tech Buzz Game, it’s a fantasy prediction market for technology. Your goal is to predict what technologies people will be searching the web for in the future. You put your (fantasy) money where your mouth is by buying stock in the technologies you believe will be popular and selling stock in the technologies you think will flop.

I played in the first round this summer when they were giving Apple prizes (iPod, iMac, etc.) to the top placers (no, I didn’t win anything). This round, however, seems to be “play for fun” only. Sign up at the Buzz Game website if you’re interested in playing.

[Correction (10/13/05): The first place prize was a Mac mini, not an iMac...]
