New Extension from Google: Blogger Web Comments

In addition to a phishing protection extension, Google has released a “Blogger Web Comments” extension for Mozilla Firefox, which shows you what bloggers across the Internet are saying about the websites you’re visiting.

Although Google gives the impression that it’s Blogger-only, their FAQ says in question 4 that it uses Google Blog Search, meaning it supports all blogs (yippee!).

The extension puts an icon in Firefox’s status bar. When you click on it, you get a context menu:

When you click “View Comments,” it shows you a list:

A neat idea, but I haven’t discovered any interesting blogs (except mine, of course ;-) ) using the extension yet.

  1. I have had a strang experience with this and another Google Extension, when I go to install them I get a notice that I am using an unsupported version of Firefox, I am then sent to the Firefox download page. Since I am using the most recent version I Firefox, I just didn’t use the previous extension. This extension you mention seems interesting, so I was troubled to get the same message. I actually downloaded the latest version of Firefox and reinstalled it. I get the same message. I use quite a lot of extensions, so I think it could be a conflct with an existing extension(s).

  2. You’re using Firefox 1.5, right? This extension and the phishing protection extension only work with that version.

FYI, for some reason version 1.0.x users apparantly aren’t notified via Firefox’s automatic update feature that version 1.5 is available.

  3. Yes, I am using 1.5 and have since RC 1. I am using the final release and re-downloaded it yesterday.

  4. Hmm, that’s odd… I suppose the first thing I’d do is clear out Firefox’s cache (Tools > Options > Privacy > Cache > Clear Cache Now), then redownload the XPI file for the extension. If that doesn’t work, I guess your best bet would be to contact the technical support team for the extension by emailing them at labs+webcomments@google.com.
